The persistent heavy rainfall in Mpumalanga has resulted in the temporary closure of popular tourist destinations from 12 January 2026, particularly those located in the Panorama Route.
The affected sites include Lone Creek Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Mac-Mac Pools, God’s Window, The Pinnacle, and Bourke’s Luck Potholes.
According to MTPA(Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency), the decision to halt access to these sites is aimed at ensuring safety for visitors as well as employees.
“ This precautionary measure is taken to ensure your safety, as current waterfall levels are unsafe for public access. The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) wishes to inform tourists and members of the public that the decision is informed by further assessments conducted due to persistent heavy rainfall.
“ MTPA appeals to tourists and the business community to exercise patience and understanding during this period. Tourists are encouraged to explore alternative attraction sites offered by the Place of the Rising Sun. Further communication will be issued once the situation improves and the sites are deemed safe for access,” said MTPA.
The Kruger National Park has also issued an advisory to tourists regarding the closure of certain sections of the park due to continued rainfall posing a danger to the well-being of tourists and staff members.
