An investigation has been ordered by Mpumalanga Acting Police Commissioner, Major-General(Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, following the death of a 60-year-old man who was allegedly assaulted by two police officers in Piet Retief on Sunday 8 September.
The victim reportedly died in hospital on Monday 9 September after he was admitted with some injuries.
According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the two police officers responded to a domestic violence incident at a certain house and the circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation.
“ The South African Police Service(SAPS) in Mpumalanga is aware of the serious allegations concerning the male victim who died under questionable circumstances, as well as the allegations levelled against two police officers who attended a domestic complaint,” said Mdhluli.
Major-General Mkhwanazi said nothing will be swept under the table and made an assurance that no form of misconduct will be allowed from members of the police service.
“ The incident is regrettable, and if these members are found to have taken the law into their own hands, then unfortunately they will have to be charged accordingly and face the full might of the law,” said General Mkhwanazi.
Colonel Mdhluli said an immediate internal investigation has been initiated to ensure a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident. He also said that a separate investigation into the matter will be conducted by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate(IPID).
“The SAPS in Mpumalanga will fully cooperate with the IPID in this inquiry, as we believe in transparency and accountability. We are committed to upholding the highest standards of conduct within our ranks, and any officer found to be in violation of these standards will face appropriate disciplinary action,” said Mdhluli.
He furthermore urged community members to remain patient as both investigations unfold.
“ The integrity and trust of the SAPS are paramount, and we are dedicated to ensuring that justice is served,” Mdhluli concluded.
