Two suspects, both aged 27, made brief separate appearances before the courts in Kabokweni and Lyndenburg on Friday 3 November in connection with a business robbery, murder of Megan Griesel(20), attempted murder, business burglary and contravention of the explosive Act, which all occured on 21 October in Lyndenburg.
According to information released by Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the two accused were allegedly part of a group of about ten heavily armed men, driving a white Isuzu bakkie, who stormed into a fuel station (In Lyndenburg) after midnight and carried out their criminal act.
” According to further details, the suspects were seen carrying pistols as well as rifles and they reportedly held the staff at gunpoint. It is also alleged that the suspects denoted some explosives to gain access to the drop safe then took an undisclosed amount of cash as well as some cigarettes,” said Mdhluli.
Mdluli alluded that the suspects proceeded to a nearby shopping complex and attacked another filling station, whereby they also took an undisclosed of money and cigarettes. Furthermore, they reportedly forced their entry into a liquor shop within the shopping complex, whereby they helped themselves to expensive beverages and cigarettes.
” A report shows that they were shooting randomly at the scene also firing some shots towards any motor vehicle that was approaching the crime scene. Unfortunately as a result, Ms Megan Griesel, who was reportedly traveling alone in a vehicle was fatally shot inside the car which was riddled with bullets,” he said.
In addition, Mdhluli said investigations by the Provincial Task Team led to the arrest of the first suspect in Masoyi, outside of White River on 1 November, while the second suspect was reportedly arrested in Kanyamazane on 2 November.
” The team is working around the clock to ensure that the remaining suspects are swiftly brought to book. The matter was was postponed to Tuesday 7 November, whilst the suspects remained in custody. More charges could be added against the suspects as the investigation continues,” Mdhluli concluded.
