The MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL) in Mpumalanga, Vusi Shongwe, is warning road users to stay away from driving under the influence of alcohol during the busy festive season, in order to avoid unnecessary accidents and fatalities.
Although the MEC acknowledges that most companies, stokvels and revellers in general will host year-end functions and other activities which normally include alcohol, he however called for people to enjoy themselves responsibly.
” We must all play our part this festive season by being vigilant on the road. Those who travel long distances should rest sufficiently along the way. They must also ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy,” said MEC Shongwe.

He also called upon motorists to exercise patience when approaching construction sites on the road.
” As part of responding to anticipated traffic volumes on most roads, the department will continue to monitor traffic flow and enforce the law. The department will deploy traffic officials during the night on identified priority routes,” said Shongwe.

It was furthermore mentioned that DCSSL officials will conduct night shift duties at Lebombo Border Gate in order to tackle continued congestion.
” Law enforcement will not show any leniency towards reckless driver behaviour or any lawlessness. They will impound vehicles that are not roadworthy without any hesitation,” said Shongwe.
