A tavern shooting that occurred at Jim Brown, in Marite, on Friday 31 October 2025, has led to a case of murder being investigated by the police in Calcutta.
One man, who appeared to be a target, was reportedly shot dead by three unknown gunmen who stormed the tavern and fired indiscriminate shots.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe, said  preliminary reports indicate that the male victim had been at the tavern when three armed suspects arrived then began firing shots at his vehicle, a silver grey Mahindra.
The suspects are said to have later entered the tavern and randomly fired some shots, causing patrons to flee for safety.
“ Police received a complaint about a shooting around 22h00 and immediately proceeded to the scene. Upon arrival, Police found the lifeless body of a man in the bushes, next to the main road. He was unfortunately certified dead by the Paramedics who also attended the scene.
“ It is further reported that the male victim ran out of the tavern. It was during this time when suspects ran after him, whilst shooting at him until he collapsed outside the premises. The suspects are said to have then fled the scene in a white VW Polo,” said Captain  Nonyane-Mpe.

It was also reported that the victim’s firearm was missing from its safe and it is suspected that the weapon could have been stolen.

“ At this stage, the motive for the shooting is unknown, and no arrests have been made yet. The investigation is ongoing. Police urge anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to contact Detective Lieutenant Colonel Sikhumbuzo Ceko on 082 922 9902,” said Captain Nonyane-Mpe.
