A 40 year-old male driver was arrested and released on R2000 bail after he was caught speeding excessively on the N4 Schoemanskloof Road, on Tuesday 16 July.

The man, travelling in a black VW Golf 5 GTI, was reportedly nabbed by the Mpumalanga Traffic Intervention Unit(TIU) from the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL).

“ He was driving at 199 km/h on a 100 km/h zone. He was taken to Ngodwana police station and was charged with reckless and negligent driving,” said DCSSL spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi.

DCSSL MEC, Jackie Macie, said the traffic officer have done a great job in stopping the alleged speeding driver on his tracks, and that this should be a lesson to other reckless motorists who put the lives of innocent people at risk.

“ We must not hesitate to punish motorists who think they can drive as they please while putting the lives of other people in danger. We believe that the arrest will send a strong message to those who disregard the rules of the road and also disobey law enforcement officers,” said Macie.

The MEC said traffic officers must work earnestly and arrest motorists who offer bribes.

The speeding motorist will reportedly soon appear at the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court facing the said charges.
