A district clean up campaign targeting some hotspots around Mbombela took place on 21 April. It was an initiative by the department of agriculture, rural development, land and environmental affairs(DARDLEA), in collaboration with Ehlanzeni district municipality, Green Development Foundation, city of Mbombela, Silulumanzi, FABCOS, We Care Nelspruit, Buscor, Zonda Iinsila programme’s Imvelo Kanyamazane primary cooperative and other stakeholders.
The campaign was conducted under the theme; “supporting sustainable waste practice and foster a cleaner environment”, reportedly aimed at tackling the growing waste management challenges in the city. It also encouraged communities to take collective responsibility to promote a cleaner and safer environment, furthermore calling for the reduction of illegal dumping in communities by following proper waste disposal and environmental conservation.
Ehlanzeni district mayor, Jester Sidel, also actively participated in the campaign while advocating for the need to keep the city clean, not only to boost tourism but also for the benefit of the ecosystem.
