A celebratory mood outside a voting station at Boikhutso, in the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality, was silenced in the early hours of Thursday 5 November 2026, by the tragic death of a 57-year-old male who was allegedly fatally shot by unknown gunmen.
Speaking for the police in Mpumalanga, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli said the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds on the upper body and subsequently succumbed to the injuries.
“According to information at this stage, the deceased was amongst a group of people who were celebrating outside the gate of the voting station while waiting for the counting to be concluded and the results announced, “said Brigadier Mdhluli
The Bigadier said allegations point to two unknown male suspects who emerged and fired shots at the group, before fleeing the scene.
“After the shooting, it was noticed that someone had been gunned down. He was immediately taken to the hospital by a family member, where he was certified dead-on arrival.” said Brigadier Mdhluli.
According to Brigadier Mdhluli, the police in Bushbuckridge are investigating a case of murder, while the motive for the shooting is still unknown at this stage and no suspects have been arrested.
“Police are appealing to anyone who may have information that can assist in the investigation to contact the nearest Police Station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Information may also be provided anonymously via the My SAPS App;” said Brigadier Mdhluli.
