The community meeting was reportedly convened to address resident concerns, resolve outstanding issues, and provide clarity on project plans and timelines for the implementation of the road upgrade.
MEC Thomo emphasised that infrastructure projects cannot succeed without the people they are meant to serve.
“Our communities remain a critical stakeholder in the successful execution of our infrastructure projects. Their participation, concerns and inputs are essential to ensuring that projects respond to local needs and are implemented effectively,” said MEC Thomo.
Residents used the platform to raise issues affecting households along the D2571, including access during construction, job opportunities, and timelines for completion.
The Department said the engagement is part of a broader approach to put communities at the center of project implementation.
“Follow-up engagements will be undertaken to monitor progress, address outstanding matters and ensure that the commitments made during today’s engagement are followed through,” the Department confirmed in a statement issued.
Officials noted that meaningful community participation is key to ensuring infrastructure delivers real benefits on the ground.
“Meaningful community participation remains central to ensuring that infrastructure development delivers tangible benefits to the people it is intended to serve,” MEC Thomo added.
The D2571 rehabilitation and upgrading project is reportedly expected to improve connectivity, road safety, and economic activity in and around Lydenburg once completed.
The Department said it will continue working closely with local leadership and residents throughout the construction phase.
