A shooting incident at a tavern in Kanyamazane, on Monday 26 May 2025, has resulted in the arrest of a 33-year-old suspect who was charged for attempted murder and illegal discharge of a firearm.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Lt-Col Jabu Ndubane, said a part-time DJ at the tavern sustained gunshot wounds on the ear and leg during the incident which reportedly occurred at around 5:30.
According to Lt-Col Ndubane, the injured victim saw his intoxicated friend in the company of an unknown male who was carrying the friend’s bag and jersey. The victim reportedly approached the suspect, out of concern.
“ The suspect suggested that they step outside due to the loud music next to DJ booth. Once outside, the suspect reportedly warned the victim not to question him,” said Lt-Col Ndubane.
The victim reportedly tried to reason with the suspect, informing him that he was only looking out for his friend, but things took a turn for the worst when he tried to contact his employer.
“ While the victim was reaching for his phone, the suspect allegedly drew a firearm and cocked it. A gunshot was fired and the suspect approached the victim, pointed a firearm at his head and fired a second shot. The bullet narrowly missed, grazing the victim’s left ear. The first shot is believed to have ricocheted off the ground and injured the victim’s leg,” said Lt-Col Ndubane.
The suspect reportedly fled the scene, but he was apprehended by members of the community who witnessed the incident.
“ He was subsequently handed over to the police and taken into custody. The firearm used in the incident was recovered and is reportedly licensed. The suspect is expected to appear before the Kanyamazane Magistrate’s Court, facing charges of attempted murder and unlawful discharge of a firearm,” said Lt-Col Ndubane.
