The former Executive Mayor of Nkangala District and Emalahleni Local Municipality, Leah Mabuza, was appointed as the new Member of the Executive Council(MEC) for the Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation(DCSR) on Wednesday 4 September.
Mabuza’s appointment follows the resignation of Fidel Mlombo to allow the governing party to implement its guidelines on gender balance. Mlombo has been reportedly deployed to the Provincial Legislature as a member.
In congratulating Mabuza for her new appointment, Mpumalanga Premier-Mandla Ndlovu, said he had to apply his mind and invite Mabuza, who is said to be one of the senior members of the governing party(African National Congress), to be part of the Executive Council.

“ The new MEC is not only appointed as a woman, but a person who grew up in the organisation, holding various roles and responsibilities. We expect her to serve the people of the province with high morals. We wish the MEC everything of the best in her new responsibility. We know that she has never failed in the past and she is not going to fail on this role,” said Ndlovu.
In addition, Premier Ndlovu said Mabuza will be tasked with the assignment to promote programmes that unearth talents for various sport activities and creative industry.
Ndlovu urged Mabuza to ensure that Mbombela Stadium hosts the International Rugby match between the Springboks and Argentina on 28 September this year.
The Premier equally applauded Mlombo for a sterling performance in his short stint as DCSR MEC.
