The office of Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison(DCSSL), Vusi Shongwe, has released a statement, calling for calm in the community of Mangweni in Komatipoort, following the brutal murder of ANC(African National Congress) councillor, Thabo Ngwenya(35), who also served as a Member of the Mayoral Committee(MMC) at Nkomazi Local Municipality.

The deceased reportedly sustained two gunshot wounds when he was ambushed at his home by four armed suspects on Tuesday evening of 2 April 2024.
A police report has revealed that Ngwenya’s wife was allegedly assaulted by the assailants during the attack.

The suspects also reportedly robbed the deceased councillor and his wife of cellphones and a Toyota bakkie.
According to the statement by DCSSL, the motive for the killing is not yet known at this stage.
Shongwe has called on the community members to assist police to find the suspects linked to the murder.
“ We condemn the incident in the strongest possible terms, however, we appeal for calm in the community. Instead, members of the public must help the police by providing any information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects.
“ They must be brought to book and face the full consequences of their cowardly deeds. We cannot be held at ransom by heartless individuals who have no regard for human life,” said Shongwe.
The MEC has extended his condolences to the family of the slain councillor, his colleagues in the council and the entire community of Nkomazi.
