A high density operation took place around Tonga in Nkomazi local municipality on Friday evening and early hours of Saturday morning, resulting in the arrest of several people for various crimes.
The operation was led by MEC for community safety, security and liaison(DCSSL) – Vusi Shongwe, together with Mpumalanga provincial police commissioner- Lt general Semakaleng Manamela.
According to a statement released by DCSSL, two people were taken in for violating the Immigration Act, four people were arrested for trading in alcohol without licenses and fined R5000 each, two people were arrested for possession of illegal gambling machine and each fined R1500, one person was arrested for assault with intention to do grievous bodily harm,
expired goods were confiscated at Tonga shopping complex.
MEC Shongwe expressed contentment with the level of commitment by officials as it goes a long way in reducing criminal activities.
” We want the province to reduce crime, the same way we have reduced road fatalities and fatal crashes during the recent Easter holidays. When we work together as a security cluster, an impact will be made in fighting crime,” said Shongwe.
The overall Friday operation is reportedly an initiative by DCSSL, in conjunction with other departments and organisations in the justice, crime prevention and security cluster (JCPS), who come together to fight crime in identified areas during specific weekends.
