A well-known writer Thomas Jefferson once said, “ Agriculture is our wisest pursuit because it will, in the end, contribute most to real wealth, good morals & happiness.” MEC for Agriculture Rural Development, Land and Environment  affairs Mandla Msibi and Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane accompanied by other MEC’s in Mpumalanga and Deputy minister of human settlement David Mahlobo and Bukhosi officially launched the ‘Agricultural Food Basket Initiative’ in Gert Sibande district.
Mashile and Mtshweni –Tsipane officially handed over about 300 hectares. The hectares that were given are as follows: 100 hectares in Inkalane CPA, 100 hectares in Mantjolo and 100 hectares in Embhuleni Traditional communities.
In her speech, Mpumalanga premier said  farmers should not worry much about market of their produce  as they will make sure their market is always in place and they sell all their produce without  problems assisted by the provincial government . “ In this launch and unveiling today as a province we will see a cultivation of a minimum of 300 hectares. A net income of Twenty Eight Million Rands which will be realised from the sales of the fresh produce to the government nutrition programme, in which a minimum not less than Nineteen million will go straight to the farmer’s pockets”, she said.
The flagship programme which is currently on phase one is expected to benefit about Two thousand Seven Hundred seasonal workers totalling Three Thousand. the project is expected to go as far as the fourth phase. Phase Two is expected to create about Five Thousand four Hundred permanent jobs and Eight Thousand One hundred seasonal jobs totalling Thirteen Thousand Five Hundred green jobs.
The project has to continue where the Third and final phase is expected to create about Twenty Four Thousand Three Hundred and Forty –Eight permanent jobs and Thirty-Six thousand Five Hundred and Twenty-Two seasonal totalling Sixty Thousand Eight hundred and seventy jobs.
The premier promised that the land will not only be ploughed but they will as a province make sure that all that be planted will be harvested and straight the market as well as school nutrition and hospitals.
