Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe is calling for workers to be transported safely at all times.
Shongwe made this call after a truck that was transporting farm workers on D1246 Road towards eMahlathini Bordergate, overturned and left three people dead.
eMahlathini Bordergate links the country and eSwatini near Mkhondo.
According to information received, it is suspected that the truck driver lost control and led to the vehicle overturning on the gravel road. Two men and one woman were declared dead on the scene.
The driver was slightly injured while one person sustained serious injuries and both were transported to the nearby Piet Retief Provincial Hospital for medical attention.
It is also alleged that the trucks licence may have expired and will form part of the investigation into the crash that is already underway.
“Farm owners must always ensure that the safety of workers on the road. We cannot afford to have people being transported in a manner that endangers their lives. Those who employ and ferry workers, should always obey the rules,” Shongwe says.
Meanwhile the MEC is sending condolences to the bereaved families and is also wishing those who were injured a speedy recovery.
