The department of education and DCSSL (Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison) in Mpumalanga, have entered into a partnership to promote safety within schools in Ehlanzeni region and around the province. This initiative is said to fall under the school safety programme.

According to a statement released by DCSSL, the programme is conducted annually where learners from problematic schools, identified by the department of education, are taken to correctional facilities to have a first hand experience of life behind bars. This is reportedly used as a tool to deter the learners from being involved in criminal activities.

” Since Monday(24 July), the department took learners from various schools in Nkomazi local municipality to the prison. The schools are, Zenzele, Ntiyi, Luvuyo and Sidlamafa secondary schools. Today, learners from Ngwaritsane and Magabotse secondary schools in Bushbuckridge local municipality, were the ones who went and experienced prison life,” said DCSSL
