Seven men appeared before the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday in connection with the alleged murder of one victim and assault of another in Vosman.
The alleged incident reportedly occurred on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 October whereby two male victims aged 38 and 29 years old were said to have been assaulted after they were accused of breaking into a local tavern.
According Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Captain Magonseni Nkosi, a tavern employee alongside the suspects launched a manhunt in search of the two victims.
ā€œ The manhunt resulted in the apprehension of a 29 year old victim on Friday. The victim was allegedly taken to the tavern where he was assaulted with different objects, and boiling water poured over his body. He survived the ordeal after one of the suspects called on his accomplices to stop the torture.
ā€œ The following day, the second victim, a 38 year-old was also apprehended and brought to the tavern where he was subjected to the same torture as the first victim. He was released after his child intervened and the victim was taken to hospital by a family member, but succumbed to his injuries on Sunday,ā€ said Captain Nkosi.
The suspects, aged between 28 and 43, were arrested after police were called to the hospital to attend a murder case.
According to Captain Nkosi, the suspects remain in custody and they will appear at the same court on Friday 25 October facing charges of murder, assault and kidnapping.
The Acting Police Commissioner in Mpumalanga, Major-General(Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has condemned the incident and cautioned community members against vigilantism.
