Sthembiso Eugine Mahlalela from Mjokwane Secondary School in Ehlanzeni District, scooped the coveted award for National Overall Winner in Excellence in Teaching Mathematics(FET), during the 2024 National Teaching Awards ceremony held in Gauteng.
Mahlalela’s achievement was duly recognised by Mpumalanga MEC for Education, Cathy Dlamini, who said Mahlalela has displayed exceptional dedication and passion for inspiring young minds, thus he deserved the prestigious recognition.

“ Your commitment to education has set a remarkable example for all. You are a true inspiration to our province and our country. Thank you for flying the Provincial flag high,” said MEC Dlamini.
The ceremony was also attended by President Cyril Ramaphosa who delivered the keynote address. Ramaphosa acknowledged the contribution by teachers in shaping and guiding young people to become better citizens.
“ I congratulate the Department of Basic Education for sustaining the National Teaching Awards. The awards are now in their 24th year, nearly as old as our democracy. A good teacher is a role model who encourages a child to achieve their potential. But a teacher who disregards their responsibilities, who rules by fear, can demoralise a child, damage their self-esteem and put them off learning,” said Ramaphosa.
Other dignitaries who were present at the awards ceremony include the Minister of Basic Education- Gwarube, Premier of Gauteng-Panyaza Lesufi, and Education MEC’s from various provinces.
