The Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs (DARDLEA) in Mpumalanga has sounded the alarm on the devastating impact of climate change on farmers and communities.
MEC Nompumelelo Hlophe expressed grave concern during the Provincial Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) Dialogue held on 5 November, at the Capital Mbombela.

“By exchanging knowledge, experiences gained from research, technology, and strategies based on successful experiences in climate-smart approaches, we will be addressing the Climate Smart Agriculture’s main objectives,” MEC Hlophe emphasised.
These objectives include:Â
• Higher Agricultural Productivity and Income Sustainability
• Higher Resilience to Climate Change
• Reduction of Green House Gas (GHG) Emissions
The two-day dialogue, organised by the National Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development(DALRRD)in collaboration with DARDLEA, brought together representatives from AFASA, NAFU, AgriMpumalanga, YARD, WARD, and SAFDA to share knowledge, experiences, and best practices in climate-resilient agriculture.

Key Topics Discussed:
• Policy Perspective on Climate Change by DALRRD • Provincial Climate Change Interventions in Agricultural Sector by DARDLEA
• Climate Smart Strategic Framework on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation by DALRRD
• CSA Programme and Climate Resilient Agriculture Approaches by FAO
• Artificial Intelligence and CSA by Portals Global Consulting Group
• Implications of Climate Change in the Water Sector by IUCMA
• Innovations and Technologies for Smart Agriculture by Water Research Council (WRC)
• Climate Change Trends and Long-term Focus by CSIR
• CSA Approaches by ARC
MEC Hlophe stressed the province’s responsibility to ensure a collective response to climate change by capacitating farmers and local communities.
“We must implement climate change adaptation and mitigation applications and systems to prevent or reduce climate change impacts,” she added.

As Mpumalanga moves forward, it’s clear that climate-smart agriculture will play a vital role in ensuring the resilience of the province’s agricultural sector. With leaders like MEC Hlophe at the helm, there’s hope for a sustainable future.
