Two Mpumalanga MEC’s, Thulasizwe Thomo(Department of Public Works Roads and Transport) and Jackie Macie(Departments of Community Safety, Security and Liaison), visited the Putco depot at Moloto, in the Nkangala District on Wednesday 29 January 2025, following the alleged arson attack which resulted in 51 buses being torched to ashes.

The incident occurred on Monday evening 27 January 2025, in which a group of about 15 armed suspects allegedly stormed into the said depots and set the buses alight.
One security guard was reportedly shot and injured while another security guard was reportedly assaulted. Two suspects, allegedly linked to the crime, have since been arrested on Tuesday 28 January 2025, while a manhunt is still underway for more suspects.
Thomo said the visit was aimed at assessing the extent of the damage caused during the alleged attack and the effect it has on commuters.
“ We are pleased with the rapid response from law enforcement, with two suspects apprehended and investigations continuing in the matter,” said Thomo.
DCSSL MEC, Macie, conveyed his sympathy to the Putco management and the local community who are directly affected by the incident, as they rely on Putco for daily transport. Macie furthermore pledged support to the establishment going forward and emphasised that the incident appears to be well-orchestrated.
According to Macie, the culprits have not only sabotaged Putco, but the economy of the country.
“ We characterise this incident as an act of sabotage. We don’t know the motive as yet, but with the investigation unfolding, we are now heading in the right direction, hence we have arrested two suspects.
“ More information will be uncovered with their assistance. We promise the people of Mpumalanga that we’ll leave no stone unturned. We congratulate SAPS for a job well done,” said Macie.
MEC Macie added that he is unable to divulge more details pertaining to the case, as investigations are still underway.
Thomo said his Department is committed to working alongside all relevant authorities and communities to ensure that such incidents do not undermine the progress made in building a reliable, integrated public transport system in Mpumalanga.
“ Our focus will continue to be on ensuring the safety of commuters and maintaining a seamless public transport network,” Thomo concluded.
The two MEC’s were accompanied by members of the South African Police Service, as well as officials from the Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality. Putco management was also present during the visit.
