Whilst the country is still celebrating its Heritage Month, a number of young stars across the country have gathered in Durban in competing over different indigenous games where Mpumalanga province also took part with a number of its own young talented stars competing for the best with other provinces.
The competition is the 15th National Indigenous games competition and was officially opened by Minister for Sports arts and Culture, Nathi Mthetwa where he encouraged young people and South Africans never to let go of their roots.
“These games have been in existence for the past 15 years and as a department, we have made an undertaking alongside our partners to conserve the legacy of this game. Our own heritage games we will preserve as we want them to grow from strength to strength. We are not only looking at them being local but we must take them international. The beauty of the indigenous games is that we have in our lifetimes participated in them and will forever be there. The indigenous games showcase the Nine well-played indigenous games played across South Africa.
I am happy to see a number of young people on this beautiful heritage month gathered to compete in Indigenous games, this says to us a country that we still respect our cultures. Our traditions as Africans means a lot to us and we need to pride ourselves, we should at all times remember where we are from “, he said.
The indigenous games are expected to start from 25 – 29 September 2021.
The game code include: Dibeke, Diketo, Drie-Stokies, Intonga, Jukskei, Khokho, Morabaraba, Kgati and Ncuva.
