The MEC for Education in Mpumalanga, Bonakele Majuba, highlighted the importance of safety measures, vigilance and adherence to protocol in schools, during his visit on 27 November, to the bereaved family of an 18 year old learner who passed away at a school camp.
The learner reportedly succumbed to a snakebite during a recent Grade 12 school camp organised at Mawewe Secondary School in Matsavana Circuit-Dumfries Village, under the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality.
” On behalf of the Mpumalanga Department of Education, we extend our deepest sympathies to the learner’s family, friends and the entire school community, during this difficult time.
” This is heartbreaking, our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate this profound grief,” said Majuba.

The MEC commended the school for its swift response to the incident and the ongoing efforts to provide counseling and support to the affected learners.
” The safety and well-being of our learners remain our top priority. We will continue to work closely with schools to ensure that such incidents do not occur and that our learning environments foster a culture of safety and responsibility.
” The Department remains committed to providing the required support to the bereaved family and the school community during this challenging time,” said Majuba.
The learner was laid to rest on Saturday.
