South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced the 19th annual SA National Parks Week, taking place from September 9-13 2024, with extended free access to September 14-15.

SANParks’ spokesperson, JP Louw, said the week-long celebration kicks off with a launch event at Marakele National Park on September 8 2024, which will offer free access to day visitors in most of the 21 national parks under SANParks management.

“We are thrilled to once again offer free access to our stunning national parks, allowing South Africans to experience the beauty and diversity of our natural and cultural heritage. However, please note that free access does not include accommodation facilities or other tourist activities,” said Louw.

According to Louw, the South African National Parks Week has been a resounding success since its inception in 2006, attracting thousands of day visitors to various parks under SANParks.

“This initiative not only promotes education and awareness about conservation but also fosters a sense of pride in our country’s natural, cultural, and historical heritage,” he said.

Louw emphasised that SA National Parks Week highlights the importance of sustainable development practices and partnerships with local communities, businesses, scientists, and tourists.

“By working together, we can ensure the long-term preservation of our natural and cultural treasures for future generations. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to explore South Africa’s national parks and experience the rich natural and cultural heritage of our country,” he said.

Louw added that visitors can visit the SANParks website (http://www.sanparks.org/about/events/parks_week/) for specific dates and participating parks.
