The de-establishment of Umjindi Local Municipality is said to be re-determined through a consultation process between the Municipal Demarcation Board and various stakeholders.
The municipality was reportedly merged with Mbombela Local Municipality to form the City of Mbombela Local Municipality in 2016, but an application was submitted by COGHSTA(the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs) to the Board, calling for the re-establishment of the municipality.

According to a statement by Mpumalanga Provincial Government, Thabo Nyoni (the Board Chairperson), met with senior provincial leaders including Premier Mandla Ndlovu, COGHSTA MEC Speedy Mashilo, Executive Mayors and Municipal Managers on Monday 24 February 2025, at Ehlanzeni District Council Chamber in Mbombela.
“ Consultations will be in earnest from March 2025, and will include communities. It is envisaged that the process will be finalised in September 2025. Premier Ndlovu urged all stakeholders to accept the outcome of the decision by the Board, whether it will be in their favour or not,” said the Mpumalanga Provincial Government.
