Five foreign nationals were arrested for the alleged damaging of essential infrastructure and contravening the immigration act, after they were reportedly found in possession of overhead cable to the value of R3 million, Bolt cutter and a Isuzu bakkie to the value of R150 000.

The suspects, aged between 14 and 34, were said to be arrested in Delmas on Sunday by members of the Hawks serious organised crime investigation based in Middleglburg, after Transfer shared information about a group of suspects who were planning to steal Transnet overhead cables.

” The team comprising of the Hawks, Transnet investigators, local criminal record centre and Amahlo solution, conducted an intelligence driven disruptive operation. During the operation five foreign nationals were found busy cutting the Transnet overhead cables,” said spokesperson for the Hawks in Mpumalanga, captain Dineo Sekgotodi.

She added that the accused appeared before Delmas magistrate’s court and were remanded in custody until 20 September, pending further investigation.
