Mpumalanga Province is playing its part in the fight to reverse the adverse effects of climate change by introducing the Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage(CCSU)Programme.

The programme, that was officially launched by the Minister of Mineral Resources & Energy-Gwede Mantashe, alongside Mpumalanga Premier-Mandla Ndlovu, in Leandra(Govan Mbeki Local Municipality)on Friday 30 August, is said to be designed to capture carbon dioxide and store it through the use of advanced technology.

Mpumalanga is cited among the sources of carbon emissions that fuel climate change, due to the number of coal mines.

The visit by Mantashe and the Mpumalanga provincial government reportedly follows the successful completion of a comprehensive geological characterisation of the site by Council for GeoScience. It is also reported that the CCUS Programme initiative is a key component of the National Appropriate Mitigation Actions against the phenomenon of climate change.

Speaking at the ceremony, Premier Ndlovu said the Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage Programme is expected to make a significant contribution towards reducing emissions while preserving the life span of coal in the province.

“ Here in Mpumalanga we have a lot of coal mines, which it is believed to be a contributing factor towards air pollution. So I am happy that we will now be able to store the carbon dioxide and the life span of coal will be extended,” said Ndlovu.

A Zero-net emissions by 2025, has been set as the international standard for all countries.

The launch was also attended by the MEC for Public Works, Roads & Transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, Makhosazane Masilela, The Acting Director General, Peter Nyoni, Executive Mayors, and other dignitaries.
