The South African National Parks (SANParks) is ready to welcome visitors for the 2024 festive season, with numerous safety and security interventions in place across its 21 national parks.
“We’re committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for our visitors,” says JP Louw, SANParks Communications Officer.
“Our preparations include joint operations with provincial and local authorities, civil society formations, and communities to prevent and respond to potential incidents.”
Infrastructure Refurbishments
SANParks has made significant progress with infrastructure refurbishments, thanks to an additional R700 million allocation from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) in 2023/2024.
Notable developments include:
– Refurbished Skukuza Rest Camp Rondavels and Wild Fig Guesthouse in Kruger National Park
– Implementation of a cashless payment system in Kruger National Park
– Upgrades in Addo Elephant National Park and West Coast National Park
“We appeal to visitors to be patient during infrastructure refurbishments,” Louw requests.
“Their understanding will contribute to a better experience for all.”

Safety and Security Interventions
• Kruger National Park will implement various safety measures, including:
– Joint operations with Cross-Border Management Authority, SA National Defence Force, SA Police Service, and Mbombela Traffic
– Victim Support Programs
– Communication campaigns focusing on visitor safety and emergency procedures
Table Mountain National Park Volunteer Safety Services
SANParks introduces the Table Mountain National Park Volunteer Safety Services (VSS), a partnership with civil society organisations to improve response to crime.
“ This initiative streamlines innovation and organises resources to prevent crime and support victim services,” Louw explains.
Visitor Safety Tips
SANParks urges visitors to:
– Visit their website for specific park requirements
– Book online in advance
– Hike in groups of four or more
– Carry sufficient water, supplies, and fully charged devices
– Be vigilant, especially in known crime hotspots
“By working together, we can ensure a safe and memorable experience for all,” Louw concludes.
