Mpumalanga MEC for the Department of Education, Bonakele Majuba, met with principals of Bohlabela District to outline the need to put more effort in the 2024 academic year, to improve the performance of learners in all grades.
During his address, Majuba said that the gathering was aimed at addressing the challenging results of the 2023 Grade 12 National Senior Certificate(NSC) examinations in the District of Bohlabela, which led to a 10% decline in overall performance.

He stated that the decline must be viewed as a motivational factor to take a collective approach in the quest to improve and grow.
“ We have invited you to this meeting to urge you to put extra effort and identify areas of improvement, to develop a concrete action plan, and inspire each other to rise to the challenge and rise to the occasion, to reclaim the glory of this District,” said Majuba

The MEC noted the gains attained under the district in certain schools during last year’s NSC examinations. He said that 10 683 learners passed grade 12, with 7 out of 14 circuits performing at 70% and above in schools such as Hoerskool Lydenburg, Mmasekobe Secondary, Bakutswe Secondary and Halemela Secondary, which obtained 100% pass rate, and subjects like xiTsonga performing at 97.4% pass rate.
“ Our view is that recognising these successes instills confidence, Forster’s a sense of collective pride and serves as a springboard for further progress. There must be regular monitoring and assessment to ensure progress and course correction when needed,” said Majuba.
He thanked all the dedicated teachers and non-teaching staff, supportive communities and learners for their efforts in overcoming challenges while striving for success.
Majuba also acknowledged that the challenges faced by learners in Marite and Manyeleti circuits might have contributed towards the decline in performance.
The meeting was attended by various guests and speakers including the Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Dr Regina Mhaule, amongst others.
