Thousands gathered under the winter sun to lay Kgoshi JT Moepi to rest. From government ministers to village elders, from business leaders to schoolchildren, the message was the same: a father had gone home.

Kgoshi Moepi was buried on Saturday 27 June 2026 in Marapyane, under the DR JS Moroka Local Municipality, after a lifetime spent at the intersection of culture, governance, and community service.

According to Mpumalanga COGHSTA(Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Tradirional Affairs), Kgoshi Moepi served on the Executive Committee of the Mpumalanga Provincial House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders and with distinction on the Nkangala House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders.

It was in those rooms that his character reportedly showed most.

“ His thoughtful insight, constructive engagement, and a deep commitment to ensuring that traditional leadership remained relevant in addressing the social and developmental challenges facing our communities made him stand out,” said COGHSTA.

Additionally, COGHSTA said he also served with distinction as a member of the Executive Committee of the Nkangala House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, where his voice carried wisdom, balance, and experience.

“ He actively participated in discussions aimed at improving governance, promoting accountability, protecting cultural heritage, and strengthening partnerships between traditional leadership and government,” said COGHSTA.

Dignitaries from government, traditional leadership, business, political formations, and civic society gathered at Marapyane to pay their last respect.
