“ You must focus on studies and not allow external distractions”.
These were the words of encouragement from Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL), Vusi Shongwe, during his visit to Ithafa Secondary School at Wesselton, outside Ermelo, in Msukaligwa Local Municipality on 17 January.

Shongwe’s visit is part of the School Reopening Programme for the 2024 academic year, which is reportedly an annual programme whereby public representatives visit schools across the province.
Speaking during assembly, the MEC discouraged learners from associating, idolising and socialising with criminals who thrive on wealth that is ill gotten and temporary.
“ Know why you are at school and focus on that. When you encounter challenges at home, socially, or any aspect, please speak to your teachers so that you are assisted. Counselling services are available in schools to help, so that you are able to do well in your studies,” he said.
The event was supported by civil organisations, trade unions and representatives from the Department of Education.

Other MEC’s who also embarked on the programme at various schools in Mpumalanga on the same day, include MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism-Nompumelelo Hlophe, who spoke to learners at Kwamhlanga Secondary School in the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality, and MEC for Culture, Sport and Recreation -Thandi Shongwe, who visited Camalaza Secondary School to highlight topics such as teenage pregnancy, bullying and drug abuse.
