Blind boy reading a braille book

The issue of the blind has always been one that has been discussed by many but with no action. The Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation in Mpumalanga, in collaboration with the South African Library for the Blind, has taken into consideration hearing the cry for the blind in Mpumalanga to build their own library where they will improve their skills, especially reading and referencing.

Thandi Shongwe, MEC for the Department, says the department is thrilled to open this narration studio as it will address the reading needs of the people of Mpumalanga, especially the lack of reading material in indigenous languages spoken in the province. “The studio/recording booth will focus on producing and narrating material into indigenous audio books. It will allow narrators to record books for the visually impaired using high-tech equipment that will enable the beneficiaries to borrow and listen to the narration,” concluded MEC Shongwe.

The official launch is expected to happen at the Mbombela Regional Library.
