A devastating shooting incident occurred at a tavern in Pienaar, outside Mbombela-Mpumalanga, in the early hours of Saturday 11 January 2025, leaving eight people dead and three others hospitalised.

According to the police report, six people were fatally shot at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries later in hospital. Three victims, two males and a female, are still receiving medical treatment for their injuries.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Lt-Col Jabu Ndubane, two VW Polos were found at the scene with bullet holes and one of the victims was found dead inside one of the vehicles. He said no arrest has been made so far and a team of experts, including investigators, has been assembled with a 72-hour plan to identify the perpetrators.

“ The motive behind the shooting is still unknown at this stage, and circumstances surrounding this incident is still under investigation,” said Lt-Col Ndubane.

The MEC for Mpumalanga DCSSL(Community Safety, Security and Liaison), Jackie Macie, has expressed shock and vehemently condemned the tragedy. This comes barely 24 hours after Macie called for thorough investigation into the recent spate of killings that have been reported in the province since the beginning of 2025.

“ This incident yet again brings into sharp focus the challenges posed by gun violence in this country. We are again calling on liquor traders to always prioritise the safety of their patrons.

“ We further extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and we also wish those who were injured a speedy recovery. The perpetrators must be arrested,” said Macie.

Mpumalanga Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major-General(Dr)Zeph Mkhwanazi, called for the swift arrest of the perpetrators. He assured the public that the police are working around the clock to ensure that the culprits are brought to book.

The MEC for Health in Mpumalanga, Sasekani Manzini, said the Department will continue to monitor the progress of the two patients that are still receiving medical attention following the shooting.

“ One is in the ICU(Intensive Care Unit) and one is in a stable condition. Only one patient has since been discharged,” said Manzini.
