Mmametlhake Hospital in the Dr JS Moroka Local Municipality is still grappling with water shortages, despite efforts by the Mpumalanga Department of Health to resolve the issue.
New pumps were reportedly secured and installed on Wednesday 8 January 2025.
Water was running as per normal, but pumps reportedly stopped operating on Thursday 9 January 2025.
In a statement issued by the Department, the debacle started during the festive season after water pumps and machinery broke down. Additionally, the Department said the problem was further delayed due to all shops being closed during the festive season, making it difficult to secure water pumps.
“ During this challenging time, the Department deployed two water tankers to supply the hospital and also got assistance from the local municipality. Water was supplied through the water tankers in order to ensure that the hospital is functioning,” said the Department.
A service provider was reportedly appointed to look into the matter, but was unable to complete the task due to unfavourable weather conditions.
Two tankers from the Department are said to be deployed once more to ameliorate the situation while an intervention is underway, with the hope that the problem will be resolved before the end of the weekend.
“ Patients and local residents are advised that the hospital is continuing with its function and that they will not be turned due to this problem. The Department would like to apologise to the public for the inconvenience caused,” said the Department.
